Teaching Towards Tomorrow

A first year English teacher at a high poverty school - trying to make it work while doing my part to change education (and loving it all in the process).

When I'm not prematurely graying, coaching and writing lesson plans, I read too much fanfiction, drink too much hot tea, and pet the cat. I also have problems accepting that fictional characters are not real.

GWALP opines:  While I do believe the 4-year-arts college experience is NOT for everyone, I’m sick of this mindset that college is for the “snobs” or the “elite” or something.  

You can go to “college” in a trade skill (“blue collar” if you will), often for two years (hello there, local community college), and come out with great job skills and more time on your hands to plan your family and start your career.  Most of my circle of friends—and this includes Boyfriend—went this route.  THIS is what the Obama administration wants:  Affordable, practical education for people who can then turn around and be functioning (voting) members of society.

But again, we have a candidate who doesn’t want people to be educated and makes the idea of college into a “us” and “them” issue.
