The FJP: The Ethics of Linking →
futurejournalismproject: via GigaOM: Late last week, TechCrunch writer MG Siegler broke the news that Apple was buying an app-discovery service called Chomp — although he didn’t say where that news came from, just that it was a reliable source. The Wall Street Journa l reported the same news several hours…

gjmueller: pewinternet shares their projections: Analysts generally believe many young people growing up in today’s networked world and counting on the internet as their external brain will be nimble analysts and decision-makers who will do well. But these experts also expect that constantly connected teens and young adults will thirst for instant gratification and often make quick, shallow...

The Trouble With New York's Teacher Data Dump →
Following a court challenge last year by several media outlets, the New York City Department of Education — which operates the nation’s largest school district — agreed to release individual evaluation rankings for 18,000 of its teachers. The New York Times is publishing its analysis of the data, including the teachers’ names and their school assignments. GothamSchools, an independent online...

Why grading takes me so long:
mllehazelwood: Read a page. Shake my damn head. Sit in disbelief that someone thought this was good. Check the internet to clear up my head. Finish reading paper. Craft a long letter to the student (average of 400 words) where I try to find something to praise and yet ultimately tell them why this is not good. Shake my head. They won’t even take the time to read my letter. Start again.

Reengaging a lost generation →
coolcatteacher: Some say that today’s students have lost their passion. And we may be to blame — many argue that we’ve drubbed it out of school. With dropout rates remaining problematic, how do we reengage a lost generation of students?  I wrote this piece for the Atlantic as part of a series I’m doing on teaching and education. I believe that we, as teachers, CAN do things to engage our...

Your Teacher's Ten Goals for the Next Ten Years
Have a PhD by the time I’m 31. Support my husband in starting his own business. Publish two articles in credible peer reviewed journals in the next year. Publish a book/teacher’s companion guide/instructional tool in the next three years. Align the entire Hunger Games series to the Common Core, and teach all three novels in an English elective for juniors or seniors. Become an...

Setting Long Term Goals
So often I try to figure out why so many of the students at my school - bright, beautiful, well spoken with personality out the wazoo - do not go on to succeed academically or financially. Poverty is the most obvious reason. A poor home life; domestic abuse; lack of emotional support; poor cultural role models; all of these things are factors. But I realized this week that, in addition to all the...

gjmueller: Black male teachers a rare breed Take a moment and think of all the teachers you had between pre-K and twelfth grade. Now, how many of them were black men? For most people, this question won’t take too long to answer. That’s because less than two percent of America’s teachers are black men, according to the Department of Education. That is less than 1 in 50 teachers.
